Married couples in the City of Lawrence have the added stress of raising a family in a disadvantaged community. To help couples strengthen their relationships and build skills for a “healthy marriage” Family Service offers a weekend retreat marriage education curriculum that teaches skills for positive communication and conflict resolution.
Who is Eligible to participate in Strengthening Couples?
Married couples raising children in the Greater Lawrence area, who meet low-income eligibility guidelines, are eligible to participate in SCP. Couples with active substance abuse or domestic violence issues are not appropriate for this program and are strongly encourages to seek help at Family Service Counseling Center Family Service Counseling Center or the YWCA of Greater Lawrence.
RETREAT INFORMATION
When and Where are the Retreats?
Marriage retreats are held once each month, from Friday evening through Sunday at the Staybridge Suites in Andover, MA. Couples MUST be previously registered to participate.
What goes on during the retreat?
The 20-hour curriculum is conducted in small group, individual and class format over the 2.5 day marriage retreat. Couples learn, through lecture, exercises, discussion and role play, how to communicate with one another, learn from their past, and rekindle their romantic relationships.
How much does the retreat cost?
The Strengthening Couples program is FREE for eligible couples. Accommodations are paid for by the program, as are meals and childcare for the weekend.
What will I get from the program?
Couples will leave the weekend marriage retreat with new knowledge and skills, and a renewed commitment to their relationship with their spouse. Each person will leave having learned how to:
- Communicate more effectively and peacefully with a spouse
- Express your true feelings
- Solve conflicts together
- Make joint decisions together
- Rekindle the romance and intimacy in the relationship
- Work together as parents
