Students involved in the GRAD Mentoring program are young people attending the Lawrence Public Schools in grades 6 – 9 (ages 12 – 16) who have been identified by school personnel as being at high risk for dropping out. Drop out risk is determined by poor academic performance, low attendance and other indicators of a weak student-school bond.
These are students who are often facing challenges at home and in the community. Each one’s circumstances are unique, but what they ALL can benefit from is the presence of a caring and positive adult role model. |
Mentors DO NOT need to have any special training or professional background. GRAD is simply looking for adults who can serve as positive adult role models, who can form a trusting relationship with a young person, and who are committed to the required time and duration.
- Minimum of 21 years of age.
- Ability to commit 12 months.
- Ability to meet with mentee 8 hours a month.
- Agree to submit to all background checks and safety procedures.
- Agree to participate in a training and ongoing support.
We welcome mentors who live and/or work in the Greater Lawrence area or otherwise are in geographic proximity to facilitate a close relationship. GRAD staff provide in-depth ongoing training and support to mentors. Mentors are required to complete a pre-service training, pass a safety and suitability screening, and attend occasional ongoing training sessions.
